Grant Francke

Grant Francke went to work for the railroad at 19. He was a conductor, gone for long shifts, with a high school education and no background in real estate.

He taught himself, and in 2015 he and his wife, Laura, bought a duplex. In 2019 he left the railroad.

Today Grant and his team run more than 200 units, worth about $23 million, across several Nebraska markets. What he's proudest of is how quiet his week is.

The moment it clicked for me was when a tenant called me on Christmas morning about a dripping faucet and I answered. I had gotten into real estate to get my time back, but I realized I'd just traded the railroad for another job, so I started building a business that could run without every decision, phone call, and problem coming through me.
